Pulse Pro 1.8.4

07-22-2012

Pulse Pro 1.8.4 is now out and available for download. There are two main updates in this version, one small and one rather significant.

The first is that Flexslider has been updated to v2.0. There are some visual improvements and a lot of under the hood changes that solidify its standing as the best responsive slider gallery out there.

The second part of this update is that CKEditor has been replaced by the fantastic new WYWISWYG editor Redactor (redactorjs.com ). While CKEditor served its role well for the most part, it has been outclassed by this new editor, Redactor. Visually, it has a gorgeous design and is incredibly intuitive to use.  Under the hood, it is extremely well built. CKEditor was a huge piece of bloated software and was by far the largest component of Pulse Pro. Version 1.8.3 of Pulse was about 4MB, version 1.8.4 is about 1MB. This reduced size means that the new editor is also lightning fast. It has all the typical features of an editor as well as built in support for uploading images, files and videos.

UPGRADING

To upgrade from 1.8.x to this version here are the files and folders you should replace:

pulsepro/css
pulsepro/includes (make sure to copy back your config.php file)
pulsepro/plugins

Then you also need to add a new folder to the 'data' folder.  The new folder should be named 'files'.

Happy to hear that you liked Redactor.js.

BTW ... the 'getpro' download page says version 1.8.3 still. But you get the new version when you download.

How to customize the metatags (SEO)?
Do you think to put this functionality in the CMS?

Mark @ Pulse
Kathy - You can edit the meta tags just as your normally would. Pulse does not control the entire page, just sections or "blocks" of content.

Mark - Redactor is a great improvement over what was there. Did you come across EpicEditor by any chance? It's a neat implementation of a Markdown editor instead of a wyswyg type. Might be an interesting option to offer.

Brian -
Looks pretty nice even though it's in beta. I'll keep an eye on it. But I think in most cases, Pulse is used for client installs and a wysiwyg editor is easier to use for them.

Mark-
The client use case is a strong one, would just like to point out the growing use of Markdown even in consumer based textwriting apps. I see alot of it in the iOS field - iAWriter, Byline, etc. all apps that are the top sales of the textwriting applications and aimed at consumers, not developers - and utilize Markdown formatting. :)

The big downside with Redactor is its image management which is pretty non existent compared with KCFinder. Think of a client that has uploaded a massive number of images. Redactor doesn't allow for organising as far as I can see ie. latest first, largest, etc..

Am getting a bit confused with all the current upgrades for Pulse. I think I have missed a couple of recent updates and now I am not sure what files are needed. Do I assume that I should just replace all apart from the data files and my config.php file? What about the blog files etc?

It would be really handy if you could save new versions with a version number so people can easily keep track of what version they are currently running!

Also, and I know I have mentioned this before, is there any chance of running upgrades from within the pulse admin area, server side? If you are running several sites using Pulse, upgrading each site manually is a headache!

The instructions that I sometimes provide with a release is for when you are upgrading from the previous version.

If you are several versions behind, then the usual upgrade instructions apply: http://pulsecms.com/support.php

As for Pulse updating itself somehow, that is not a feature I will be adding. It's not something I would know how to do and would potentially introduce some security issues.

Andy - Also, all versions have their own numbers so I really don't understand what you mean about that? Just look at your footer, it's right there. (Or in the instructions.txt file)
